What is Hair Tinsel?

Hair tinsel consists of thin, shimmering strands that are tied directly into the hair. Unlike micro-bead applications, this method requires no tools—just a simple knotting technique!

How to Apply Hair Tinsel Step by Step

1. Measure and Cut Your Tinsel

Start by measuring out your strand of hair tinsel. It will be folded in half and tied at the roots, so you want it to fold it in half with the two ends hanging a little bit longer than the hair from root to end to give you some room to trim it.

2. Select a Small Section of Hair

Use a foil comb to pick up a very tiny section of hair (3-5 strands). This ensures the tinsel blends naturally and stays in place.

3. Tie the First Knot

Hold the hair section away from your head and place the folded tinsel under it. Reach through the folded loop, grab the tinsel ends, and pull them through to create a secure knot near the root.

4. Secure with a Second Knot

Wrap the tinsel around the hair again, creating a backwards #4 shape, and pull the ends through the loop to tie a second knot. Gently slide the knot to the scalp.

5. Lock It in Place

Pull both tinsel ends in opposite directions until you feel the knot lock. Tie one final knot with the two ends to keep it secure.

6. Trim and Style

Carefully trim the ends of the tinsel to blend with your hair length. The doubled-up strands will add a noticeable but natural sparkle!

How to Maintain and Remove Hair Tinsel

To keep your tinsel in place, avoid combing too close to the roots. When you’re ready to remove it, simply comb from the root downward, and it will slide out easily. You can carefully use hot tools to style your hair and the tinsel, but be mindful to use a very low temperature and avoid applying too much pressure.
