What You’ll Need

  • Free SVG Converter
  • Permanent Adhesive Vinyl
  • Precision Weeding Tools
  • Transfer Tape
  • Parchment Paper for Perfect Alignment

Step 1: Convert Your Image to a Layered SVG

To start, visit this free SVG converter and upload your image. This tool will separate your image into different color layers, making it easy to cut each vinyl layer separately in Cricut Design Space.

Step 2: Upload to Cricut Design Space

Once you’ve downloaded your layered SVG, upload it to Cricut Design Space. The software will automatically sort your design by color onto separate layers.

Step 3: Clean Up Your Layers

Use the “Contour” tool in Cricut Design Space to remove unwanted details and simplify your layers.

Step 4: Cutting and Weeding the Vinyl

Load your vinyl into your Cricut machine and cut each color separately. After cutting, weed out the excess vinyl while keeping small details intact.

Step 5: Use the Parchment Paper Trick for Perfect Layering

Here’s a secret for perfectly aligning multiple layers of vinyl:

  1. Apply transfer tape to the second layer.
  2. Stick it to parchment paper, leaving only the registration marks exposed.
  3. Align the registration marks with the first layer before pressing down.
  4. Slowly remove the parchment paper and apply the full layer.

Repeat this process for each additional layer until your design is complete!

Step 6: Apply to Your Project

If you’re applying your design to a tumbler or other curved surface, press from the centre outward to prevent wrinkles. Use a hairdryer to smooth out any bubbles.

Final Thoughts

And that’s how you turn any image into a multi-layer SVG and create perfect vinyl designs! This method is beginner-friendly and works great for tumblers, shirts, and other Cricut projects.
