What is the Cricut Rotary Blade?
The Cricut Rotary Blade is designed to cut fabric, felt, and other soft materials with ease. Unlike the standard fine-point blade, this tool rolls and glides through fabric without pulling or tearing. It’s perfect for sewing projects, appliqués, and intricate fabric crafts.
What You Need to Get Started
- Cricut Rotary Blade
- Cricut Maker Machine
- Cricut FabricGrip Mat
- Felt or fabric of your choice
- Weeding tools (tweezers, spatula, or scraper)
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Cut Felt & Fabric with the Cricut Maker
1. Install the Cricut Rotary Blade
To use the rotary blade, insert it into Clamp B of your Cricut Maker. If you already have another blade installed, swap it out for the rotary blade.
2. Set Up Your FabricGrip Mat
The FabricGrip Mat has a different adhesive than other Cricut mats. Avoid touching it directly with your fingers, as the oils from your skin can break down the adhesive. Use tweezers or a spatula to place and remove materials.
3. Design in Cricut Design Space
Upload or create your design in Cricut Design Space. The rotary blade is great for cutting intricate designs, but avoid thin lines that may weaken your fabric.
4. Select the Correct Material & Blade
When selecting your material in Cricut Design Space, the software will often recommend the rotary blade automatically. If not, click “Edit Tools” and choose the rotary blade manually.
5. Cut Your Fabric
Once your material is secured on the FabricGrip Mat, load it into your Cricut Maker and press the Go button. The rotary blade will glide smoothly, giving you precise, clean cuts.
6. Cleaning & Maintaining Your Fabric Mat
After multiple cuts, your fabric mat may collect lint or fibers. While Cricut does not officially recommend cleaning, I have had success using baby wipes to remove fabric residue and extend the life of my mat.
